- This game is played with handicaps, and each player is issued a length of string depending on their handicap, which is used to improve their lie.
- A one-foot long string is given for one handicap, and so a person with a handicap of 8 would be given an 8 feet long string. This string is used by players to place their ball in a better position, even closer to the hole, without penalty. The length of the string used is then cut off from the rest of the string.
- For example, if a player hits the ball on the fairway and wants a better lie, and the closest one is one foot to the right, so the player cuts off one foot of string and moves their ball one foot to the right. Then they hit the ball, and the whole process is counted as a single stroke.
Variations:
- In some games, the string cannot be used on the green or on the tee, while in others, it can.
- In some games, all players are issued the same length of string, usually one yard, regardless of their handicaps.
