- In this game, teams of three or four players play the round. However, on each hole, one player is put on the spot: they have to come up with a decent score or “choke” and hurt the team’s chances of winning.
- The “Choker” rotates throughout the round. For example, in a three-player team, Player A would be the choker on hole 1, Player B on hole 2, Player C on hole 3, and so on. Similarly, in a four-player team, Player A would be the choker on hole 1, Player B on hole 2, Player C on hole 3, Player D on hole 4, and so on.
- The rotation of the players can be decided by the group of players themselves or by the tournament organizers through a random draw.
- The score of the player who plays the Choker ball counts on every designated hole.
- Listed below are some ways of determining the team score on each hole:
- Choker Score + Scramble Score:
This is the most common scoring method in a Choker Tournament. The choker’s score is combined with the scramble score of the other players on the team.
For example, if Player A has the choker ball on hole 1, then players B, C, and D will play the hole as a scramble, and then their scramble score is combined with Player A’s choker score to determine the final team score for hole 1.
- Choker Ball + Best Ball:
In this version, each player plays their own ball on each hole. The choker’s score makes up half of the team score. The other half of the score is determined by the best ball among the other players.
For example, if the choker ball score is 6 and the other players scored 5, 7, and 4, then the team score would be calculated as follows:
6 (choker ball) + 4 (low ball) = 10
So, the final team score for that hole would be 10.
- Choker Score + Alternate Shot Score:
This is the most common scoring method used for three-player Choker Tournaments. If Player A is the choker on a hole, then Players B and C will alternate shots on that hole. Player A’s choker score is combined with the alternate shot score of players B and C to determine the team score for that hole.
If this version is used for four-player teams, then the player who was the choker on the previous hole sits out the current hole, and the game continues as stated above.
